Plant Of the Month

November :Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus'

November is a great time for berries but here are some other plants that enliven the garden in late Autumn Autumn Berries

Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus'

Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus'

Some grasses are fantastic for winter interest. This one looks like a firework caught mid-burst. A graceful green grass in summer, as you can see it turns a lovely bronze colour for autumn.

Asplenium scolopendrium 'Cristata'

Asplenium scolopendrium The common form is known as the Hart's Tongue Fern as it looks like a deer's tongue (though I have never checked). The leaves of this little fern start off with the simple leaf shape of the Hart's Tongue, but then produces a glorious feathered crest at the end. It forms a neat dome of evergreen and is very low maintenance. Pictured here with morning frost icing the edge of each leaf.

Arum italicum

Arum italicum 'Pictum'

Just at the time when many things in the garden have died down for the winter this Arum sends up pristine glossy dark green leaves with creamy white marbling. It has insignificant flowers but the column of red berries it sends up after the leaves have died away for the summer are another plus.
