Plant Of the Month

May :Allium Aflatuense

Allium Aflatuense

Allium Aflatuense

Purple pompoms on top of a very slendour stem, these plants are a lot of fun. Growing to 75 cm they can peek up in the midst of other plants that have either finished flowering or have yet to do so. Using bulbs like these you can keep your flower border in flower for much longer!

Matteuccia struthiopteris (The Shuttlecock Fern)

This fern dies back in the winter but it is worth the wait to see the tightly curled fronds pushing up through the earth and unfurling from April onwards. The fronds are a beautiful fresh green and stand exactly as their common name suggests, like an upturned shuttlecock. Reaching above 1 metre high and quickly producing a good clump, this fern is a perfect backdrop for other showpeices in the garden. It loves damp, shady places.

Viburnum plicatum 'Mariesii'

Viburnum plicatum 'Mariesii' The beauty of this shrub is its form. With no pruning required it grows naturally into tiers. The white lacecap flowers are born daintily along the top of each branch. When mature it will span 3 metres high by 4 metres wide and will grow in sun or light shade.
