Low maintenance front garden

The Brief - front garden

In place of a rather bland garden the client wanted a pleasant garden that was attractive to birds, without a lawn for ease of maintenance, somewhere to sit in the sun, and a garden that retained an open aspect to match neighbouring gardens.

Front Garden

The Design

Even though the garden is small, it has been given a sense of movement through the cobble flow and informal crazy paving path that picks out the edge of the cobbles and then meanders towards the bench.

The bench has become an inviting place to sit by the simple addition of some open trellis work, lightly screening a neighbours garden.  The trells is planted with Humulus lupilis 'Aureus' and screened with a Choisya ternata - 'Sundance'

The plants have been chosen because they look good all year round, and for their seed-heads or berries that are attractive to birds. In this picture a Stipa gigantea (its graceful flower spike will carry on well throughout the winter), and Sedum 'Ruby Glow',(lovely autumn colour and seed-heads for birds) are shown in the foreground. The earth has been given a deep bark mulch to keep down weeds and retain moisture so the plants will thrive.
