Garden to attract birds

The Brief - Garden to attract birds

The brief was to turn this rather bleak space into a haven for birds (but with a floor surface that could be washed clean of droppings for hygiene reasons). The client wanted enough space for a small table with 2 chairs, and planting with year round interest to soften the look and attract birds.

The Design

The new garden is designed around geometric shapes, leading in an informal way up the slight natural slope to the small square patio. Slate flags with pink granite set edging give a very classy look to the hard landscaping. As you can see, shortly after planting the garden is already taking on a soft full look, Though care has been taken (as always) not to plant anything that is going to outgrow its welcome and so become a nuisance.

The finished garden
Plants to encourage birds into the garden include Cotoneaster dameri and Cotoneaster simonsii, Viburnum opulus 'Compactum' and Chaenomeles superba, 'Crimson and Gold'. Evergreen structure comes from the dwarf Rhododendron yakushimanum and an evergreen fern Polystichum setiferum. The birds have plenty of natural food, cover, bird boxes, a bird feeder and bird bath.
